One day a village called Baniyas got ambushed. It was horrible. The village woke up to militia slaughtering civilians. Men, women, children. Burning them alive. No one could verify the story because no one could get in. But I did. And I managed to get one of the most perfect interviewees.
One of the survivors turned out to be a school teacher and a hobbyist historian. He recorded things by nature. When the massacre was over and the militia left, he took his notebook and went around the village recording things. Even though his brother and his whole family got killed. He wrote everything down, to the smallest details. All these details ended up in my report and was eventually used by Human Rights Watch as a blueprint of what had happened in that village.
